Steps giveaway notes
The Giveaway is the 20% of what we receive for Steps which we are committed to giving away (we already giveaway 15% of our normal operating income).
Why do we do this?
Wouldn't it be better to keep it all and require less or borrow less? Well in some ways, yes, it would - if you are just adding up numbers with a secular perspective. The thing is, God's maths is not the same. Numbers work in a different way in the kingdom of God. The principle on which we base this commitment is that of "freely you have received, freely give" which is what Jesus says to the disciples when he sends them out (Matthew 10:8).
As we receive from the hand of God it behoves us to be open handed in giving away (not just money of course but everything). He gives, we receive, we give, others receive and so on. Somehow, by our recognising his generosity to us and by giving away in turn, we remain in a position of being in his will and blessing.
Why 20%?
We just felt that this was about the right amount. We could do more but that felt unnecessary. We could do 10% but that felt "expected". It is as though God wants to do something a bit extra through Steps so we should be a little bit extra generous in turn.
Where shall we give?
Primarily, we shall give where it does not directly benefit Wharfedale Vineyard or the people therein. The guiding criteria are:
-
There needs to be a champion
Someone in Wharfedale Vineyard must be the ambassodor for the cause in question. Willing to provide information and accountability and to call us to prayer for the cause involved. An ongoing champion for this particular need.
-
The amount needs to be significant for the recipient
Not because we want to be noticed but because we want to make a difference. So we will probably not give to the major internatiional charities this time.
-
It will be a one-off gift
The gift will not imply ongoing financial support although of course we may well continue to give toward the cause.
-
The cause must align with our vision and values
Whilst the recipient cause does not need to be overtly Christian it must be something in which we could wholeheartedly get involved.
-
The cause will be involved in the expansion of the kingdom
which will probably mean being involved in one or more of:
- Relief of poverty
- Benefit to the needy
- Mission and evangelism
How do we make a suggestion?
Please write down your suggestion, providing information which deals with the criteria above (you will be the champion) and indicate how much money you think we should give. Please get this all on one side of A4 paper (or on the electronic equivalent) and send it to the office marked "Giveaway Request".
Can I be involved in the selection?
We would love some help in this process. If you feel the Lord is prompting you and you are willing to give up the time to read through suggestions, pray over them and then meet together to decide, please let someone on the General Leadership Team know. We can't promise that everyone who wants to can be involved as we have to keep the group of people involved to a reasonable number. But please do offer.
