Have a Heart for Haiti update
In January 2010 a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti causing massive destruction. Krystyna Gadd decided to do something about raising money to send out to help the work out there. She got together a team who worked to raise £3000. This amount was matched by Wharfedale using money from our STEPS giveaway campaign, meaning that we were able to give £6000 to Mission Direct to be used in Haiti.
Here is an update about how the money was used:
Following the Haitian earthquake, Mission Direct has responded directly to the need through yours and others wonderful gifts. Working in partnership with in-country missions and charities, we have been able to impact the long-term needs of some of the poorest people on earth.
Lawrence Jones, from Mission Direct in the USA personally visited twice and spent the money directly in areas he and our partners thought would bring the greatest benefit.
In total we have received nearly £25,000. These resources have helped the following
£10,500 Ebenezer Glenn Orphanage Food, fuel, medicine and cash greatly helps this children’s home. 100 children and earthquake survivors were completely cut off from supplies, but received the aid days after the second aftershock, within 2 weeks of the event. A second supply was delivered in April. £2,800 River Dam Project Partnering with Jubilee World Missions, we paid for workers and supplies to complete a project enabling over 3,000 farmers to plant fields after the rainy season is past. This multiplied their output and gave jobs to those building the dam. 20,000 people down river are also protected from flooding. The destruction of the river dam had meant there was no water supply for field irrigation. They now bring in irrigation through new hand-dug canals, doubling the harvest. The Artibonit Valley feeds much of Haiti.
£4,200 Pastor’s League Farming Co-op We were able to help farmers purchase seed and fertilizer without having to pay the high local interest rate of 30%. This co-op has helped bring together over 40 churches that have gathered in unity. Currently this is a church league project and all of the farmers are also pastors! Here, local farmers raise crops on small one to five-acre plots. They water the land with trenches they hand dig. They pour their lives into their work, and cultivate a harvest that eventually feeds much of their nation. £7,500 Future Projects Lawrence plans to visit Haiti again in July with a USA team and expects to take a couple of further teams later in the year. Possible Projects include:
- Pastor’s prayer house construction
- Homes for Haitian refugees in the Dominican Republic
- Staff Housing and repairs at Ebenezer Glenn Orphanage
- Supplies and repairs at the Free Methodist Hospital
- School Construction in Dessalines Haiti
- Film Equipment enabling teams to show faith films in the language of the people
Thank you again for your wonderful contribution that has made so much possible and enabled us to make such a direct impact. I also enclose a few photos.
God bless
