On The Streets: Who we are, our values and priorities
We are a group of people who are following Jesus, who are being transformed by the compassion and love of Christ and who want to communicate this love and compassion to people on the streets. We are ordinary people offering God loaves and fishes for him to work miracles. We seek to proclaim good news to those we meet, freedom to the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners (Isaiah 61). We take seriously the challenge to show our faith through actions (James 2); to do justly, to love mercy and to walk humbly with our God (Micah 6:8). We seek to model a counter-cultural attitude to the people on the streets. OTS is part of “Reach Out” at the Wharfedale Vineyard and is specifically reaching out to people who sell the Big Issue in Leeds.
Our values are:
Compassion
Prayer
Seeing the image of God in all people
Mercy
The anointing and gifts of the Holy Spirit
To value people as individuals with free will
Faithfulness
Spreading the good news of the Kingdom of God
Mutuality in relationship
Generosity
Acts of kindness with no strings attached
Empowerment
Our Priorities are:
• To seek God’s heart and be part of God’s plan for the people we meet OTS
• To pray for the people we meet OTS
• To provide hot drinks, snacks and warm clothing and blankets for the people we meet OTS
• To work collaboratively with other Reach Out teams at TWV and other agencies working with people on the streets in Leeds
• To challenge public stereotypes and our own prejudices of people who might be homeless or addicted to substances
• To work with people, not for or instead of the people we meet OTS
