Burnsall and the wobbly bridge

wobbly bridgeOn Sunday 21st June 2009, the Out and About group and their guests will be taking a walk along the river Wharfe near Burnsall, with a picnic near a unique pedestrian suspension bridge which is rather wobbly.  Adults and children are welcome. This is one of a number of options on the third Sunday of the month.

Burnsall is 32 miles north-west of Leeds via A65 through Ilkley and Addingham and past Bolton Abbey and it takes around 60 minutes to get there.
In Burnsall go past the first small car park, and turn right over the narrow stone bridge, and the main summer car park is immediately on your right - a large grassy field by the riverside.  In order to get a walk in before lunch, we'd like everyone to meet there at 10.30am, which probably means leaving Leeds by 9.30am. Parking costs £4.00.  Leave a comment below if you'd like to share lifts.

As usual we're going to plan a few walk options.
The short, buggy-friendly option stepping stonesis simply to walk to the picnic spot at the wobbly bridge and return by the same route (though there is one narrow footbridge en route).  There are also some fantastic stepping stones with some big gaps, so if your children are adventurous please have a recovery plan in case they get wet.

After lunch those who can climb steps will want to continue to the hollow tree and back to Burnsall via a beautiful set of sheep-fields with tiny wicket-gates from one to the next.  Just over 3 miles altogether (see the map below).  There might also be a longer, more demanding route depending on who turns up.  Ice cream and lazing by or paddling in the (pebbly) river are all possible back at the car park.

It should be a great day out!  Suncream and strong walking shoes or boots are advisable. Please bring your own portable food for a picnic.  Bring other gear as the weather demands.
