Out and about: Otley Chevin

otley chevinOn Sunday 18th January 2009, 10.30am, the Out and About group and their guests will be taking an winter walk on Otley Chevin.  Adults and children are welcome, and this month the young people and their leaders will be joining us too AND there is a new option to do an orienteering course.  This is one of a number of options on the third Sunday.

The Chevin Forest Park is a wooded escarpment overlooking the town of Otley with magnificent views of the Wharfe Valley.

Otley Chevin is about 11 miles north west of Leeds and it takes about 25 minutes to get there from North Leeds.  From the A660 north of Bramhope, at the A658 traffic lights turn up the hill signposted to the airport.  At the next traffic lights turn right. Carry on past two car parks on the right, going steeply down and the East Chevin Quarry Car Park is on your left.  There is no charge for parking.

In order to make the most of the daylight, avoid hanging around in the cold, and get a walk in before lunch, we'd like everyone to meet at 10:30am, which probably means leaving Leeds by 10:00am.  Leave a comment below if you'd like to share lifts.

The main walk is 3 miles and will be led by David and Sally Wallace, with a shortcut for the very little people.  As there are many paths on the Chevin, hopefully you will find something you have never seen before, even if a regular visitor to the Chevin. The walks are not really suitable for buggies.

NEW this month there will be the opportunity to do some orienteering before joining the others at lunchtime at Surprise View.  This is being organised and led by Gareth Gadd.  Meet in the car park at 10.30 and Gareth will send you off in teams of at least two, with some instruction for absolute beginners.  Mobile phones will be a useful safety measure.  If you have a compass please bring it.

It would be a good idea to bring food to eat en route as we probably won't want to stop for long in the cold for a proper picnic.  If the weather permits we will pause on the rocks at Surprise View for a brief picnic.

You may also want to bring money to book a place at the Ice Cube for February - we need to confirm places and pay in advance very soon.

It should be a great day out! Temperature is forecast to be very cold. Needless to say, wrap up well, bring waterproofs, gloves, and strong walking shoes or boots.
