Out and about in Hetchell Woods

To give us time to get there after soccer school, meet just before 11am 20th April 2008 on Millner Lane north of Thorner, grid ref 380423.

 Map

There is rough ground with ample parking on both sides of the road.   Respond below to let us know in advance that you are coming.
Phone David or Sally on the day if you are on your way but late. Bring wellies or walking shoes and a packed lunch if the weather is fine. Anyone is free to come along, bring friends too.

The walk goes through some woods which are a Site of Special Scientific Interest.  Trees to swing on, a river to paddle through in wellies (if you don't want to use the bridge) and a disused railway track are other popular features of the walk.  Not buggy friendly, but fine for little ones if they can walk a couple of miles (and there is an easy shortcut if it all turns out to be too much).

If the weather is fine we'll have a packed lunch and some fun and games at the Pompocali Earthworks - a strange set of hillocks near the end of the walk, just down the path from the cars. They are
on the course of an old Roman Road. No one is certain what they are but they may be the remains of a Roman Fort. Here is a geological analysis of the area if you are really puzzled.
